15 Ideas for Landscaping Around Trees

Image
The ground underneath and surrounding a tree is often neglected, resulting in bare dirt, exposed tree roots, and a few volunteer plants that aren't necessarily welcome. Discover ways to landscape a forgotten area that will make the tree and what it shades much more appealing. Finding a solution isn't a one-size-fits-all scenario. There's a concern for damaging the tree's roots, dealing with dry soil, irrigation (too much or too little), shade, limited space (those roots!), and dappled light. Keep in mind that not all landscaping requires plants: hardscape in the form of decks, gravel, or mulch might be just the right fix. 10 Best Plants for Erosion Control

Image
The best plants for erosion control are those ground covers or shrubs that are vigorous, attractive, and have a root system effective at holding back soil on a hill. They should have spreading foliage to slow the velocity of heavy rain. If you live in deer country they should also be plants that deer tend to resist eating. The following list gives you a variety of choices, each of which meets these criteria. In your plant selection, aim for a balance between beauty and practicality. The prettiest plant you find in a garden catalog will disappoint you if you grow it under the wrong conditions (too much shade or sun) or to serve a function it is not suited to serve. How to Grow and Care for Coral Cactus

Image
Despite its common name, the coral cactus (Euphorbia lactea ‘Cristata’) isn’t a cactus at all. It is actually two different kinds of succulents that have been grafted together to create this sculptural, other-worldly-looking plant. The top ruffled portion of the plant is the crest of a Euphorbia lactea, while the green ‘stem’ (or rootstock) is a Euphorbia neriifolia. Once grafted together, these two Euphorbias make up the coral cactus. Depending on the variety of Euphorbia lactea used to create the coral cactus, the top crest of the plant can vary from green to blue-grey, to whitish-green in color.  Read More: https://www.thespruce.com/coral-cactus-6739993

How to Grow Heliotrope Indoors

Image
Popular as outdoor bedding plants, heliotropes (Heliotropium arborescens) can also be grown indoors as houseplants—adding a splash of color and pleasant aroma to your living space. In recent years, as the plant gained popularity for outdoor gardeners, breeders have introduced new varieties with different colored flowers, but the purple heliotrope remains the standard. Unfortunately, all parts of the heliotrope plant are considered toxic to animals. Despite their intoxicating smell, heliotropes are not particularly palatable plants, which keeps most pets and animals away from them. Regardless, you should ensure that this houseplant is kept out of reach of any curious four-legged family members. Read More: https://www.thespruce.com/heliotrope-indoor-plant-profile-5206445
