Peter Dutton appeals federal court ruling over medical transfer of refugees

Image
Peter Dutton is seeking to appeal in the high court a federal court ruling relating to dozens of medical transfers of asylum seekers and refugees. The government argued the federal court had no jurisdiction to hear cases brought on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers in offshore centres on Manus Island and Nauru, who were seeking urgent medical transfer to Australia. The government’s suit was in response to more than 50 individual cases brought on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers offshore, of which the majority remain before the federal court as ongoing legal matters, said George Newhouse, chief executive of the National Justice Project. 'A very bad precedent': Australia's media treatment under global spotlight

Image
As Australian Federal Police officers raided the ABC's headquarters in June, Pakistani TV anchor Zarrar Khuhro was watching from his studio in Karachi. "It freaked me out," he says. "It tells you that no one is safe." In southern Africa, Daniel Sikazwe was preparing for his lecture at the Zambia Institute of Mass Communication. "Not Australia," he thought. In countries where journalists are routinely jailed, broadcast transmissions are cut off, and state TV broadcasts the will of the government, the images of Australian police officers raiding the offices of journalists over national security concerns embolden dictators and discourage journalists, says Sikazwe. "It is a very bad precedent that Australia has set. Our leaders are very quick to point out what has happened in other countries. Now Australia will be the perfect example." Focus on team chemistry sets up Australia for cycling road worlds success

Image
Should Australia’s Amanda Spratt win gold at the 2019 Road World Championships in England on Saturday, her mind will go from the hills of Yorkshire to the mountains of Livigno in the Italian Alps. Earlier this year, Spratt and the majority of her compatriots riding in the Women’s World Tour gathered in the picturesque ski resort town at the invitation of Cycling Australia. It was an unusual invite. It was not on the eve of a major competition, nor did it bring together a group already selected for a particular race. The gathering had a higher purpose: to consolidate team chemistry and cohesion among a group of riders scattered across different trade teams and various locations. Image
Lawmakers in Sydney have voted to decriminalize abortion in the country's most populous state, overturning legal restrictions that have been in place since the start of the 20th century. On Thursday, lawmakers in New South Wales voted to pass the Abortion Law Reform Act 2019. The bill will allow women to get abortions up to 22 weeks into a pregnancy and will abolish any common law rules relating to abortion. "Unlawful abortion" has been in the state's criminal code since 1900. Women were allowed to terminate pregnancies only if a medical practitioner agreed that her physical or mental health was at risk.
