New Temporary Laws to Protect Tenants & Landlords Rights During COVID-19

Hey All,

I have never been a very hard working individual, so I had been living off the amount of rent I got from my leased property. However, things changed drastically after the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. It turned my life upside down as my wife lost her job, and we managed to keep things going with the rent and the savings we had for the past few months. Then I got the final blow when my tenant refused to pay the rent even though he was not facing any financial problems. He works with an IT firm which has been operating online and he is working from home during the lockdown and is getting paid his full salary. He is just using the pandemic as an excuse to not to pay the rent. I was feeling helpless as I had no other source of income. I had no idea how to get the rental income. So I asked him to vacate but he told me that I could not do so during the six month period starting from 29 March. I was shocked to hear this and started reading about the new laws. I got to know, as a landlord facing hardship, I could get him evicted by getting an order from VCAT for termination of the lease agreement. I found the information helpful and eventually we were able to get the dispute sorted. I am sure many of you would not be aware of this and that is why I am sharing an article so that you are not duped.
