"We did that because we felt that it was the right thing to do by the environment, but also the South Australian people were on board with that, they were pushing for that," SA Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said.

Coach Justin Langer has all but confirmed Australia will take an unchanged XI into the Boxing Day Test, saying he'd have to be "pretty courageous" to change a team that won so convincingly in Adelaide. Two days out from the second Vodafone Test, Langer said Australia would take the same side into the match at the MCG unless there's an unexpected injury in the next two days.  https://www.cricket.com.au/news/australia-unchanged-second-test-boxing-day-justin-langer-wade-burns-green/2020-12-24

Australia to fund an extra 10,000 home aged care packages at cost of $850m

Image
The Morrison government will fund a further 10,000 home care packages for elderly Australians at a cost of more than $850m in Thursday’s pre-Christmas economic update. The increase in care packages follows a commitment in the October budget to fund 23,000 new packages at a cost of $1.6bn. While the government has been increasing funding for in-home care ahead of the final pronouncements of the aged care royal commission in February next year, officials from the health department told a Senate committee in September that more than 30,000 elderly Australians had died before receiving home care packages for aged care in the past three years, despite being assessed as eligible.  https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/dec/16/australia-to-fund-an-extra-10000-home-aged-care-packages-at-cost-of-850m

Foreign affairs officials allowed to skip hotel quarantine when returning to Australia

Image
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other government officials are being allowed to skip government-mandated hotel quarantine when returning from abroad, instead spending two weeks at home. In mid-July, Australian government officials working overseas were given a special exemption when returning to Australia from government business, allowing them to quarantine in private at their own homes. The exemption is particularly useful for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which has roughly 2,939 of its 5,988 staff working overseas, according to its most recent annual report.  https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/dec/16/foreign-affairs-officials-allowed-to-skip-hotel-quarantine-when-returning-to-australia

Broken promises: Why tens of thousands of Australians will be stranded abroad this Christmas

Image
Anxious, angry and abandoned. Less than two weeks from Christmas, at least 39,000 Australian citizens and permanent residents are still stranded overseas due to Australia's international arrival caps. Hitching a ride on Santa's sleigh now seems like the only option for those wanting to make it home for the holidays. For the past five months, Australia has limited the number of international arrivals. Originally capped at just under 4,000 arrivals per week, the country is now accepting just over 7,000. Watch Australia A vs India A highlights: Ajinkya Rahane leads from the front with century on day one

Image
On a day that saw the majority of the India A batsmen disappointing, captain Ajinkya Rahane led from the front with a classy ton as the visitors reached 237/8 at stumps on day one at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney on Sunday. Cheteshwar Pujara (54 off 140 balls) scored a typically patient half century but it was Rahane (108* off 228 balls), the Indian captain for this match, who grabbed the headlines with his 34th first-class century. He remained unbeaten at the end of the day. Read more:  https://scroll.in/field/980432/australia-a-vs-india-a-warm-up-ajinkya-rahane-leads-from-the-front-with-century-on-day-one

Australia vs India 2nd T20I: "Not Quick Enough Like Dhoni," Matthew Wade Tells Shikhar Dhawan After Stumping Chance. Watch

Image
Former India captain MS Dhoni is known for his lightning-fast reflexes behind the stumps, and batsmen were especially wary playing against him as they knew he would punish even their smallest of mistakes. During the thrilling second T20 International (T20I) between Australia and India, Australia wicket-keeper and stand-in captain Matthew Wade rued not being as quick as Dhoni, after a close call on an attempted stumping against India opener Shikhar Dhawan. While Dhawan was batting during India's chase of 195 at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday, he missed a cut shot off Mitchell Swepson's bowling. He lost his balance momentarily and seeing his foot off the ground, Wade immediately whipped the bails off. China boycott to hit Australian wine harder than expected as fruit and vegetable prices rise

Image
Australia may be able to divert a “limited amount” of wine to its allies in the UK and the US, but China’s tariffs will probably reduce the value of exports. That is the conclusion of the Department of Agriculture’s Abares commodities report, released on Monday, which lists trade tensions as a dark spot in an otherwise recovering industry.
